Revived interest in UK joining the Euro ‘dangerous’
North West
Conservative Euro MP David Sumberg says he is extremely uneasy about
refreshed enthusiasm for the UK joining the Euro.
Mr Sumberg made his remarks
on the tenth anniversary of the launch of the currency. The Lib Dem
leader Nick Clegg marked the anniversary by saying that “silence
about the euro must end” and that
the economic downturn could
make people think again about their opposition to joining the euro, he
further said joining the euro would "anchor" the UK economy.
"It is
very dangerous in the turbulent economic times to lurch towards the
Euro,” he said. “At a time when we most need to be in control of our own
finances we do not want to be handing that control over to Europe.
Britain has been and can remain a leading member of the EU without
signing up to the single currency.
"The Pound's recent fall in value in no way
strengthens the case for Britain to give up our currency. We do need a
change in the management of our economy, but only a Conservative
government can deliver it. Just because our own
Government is
making a mess of the economy, that does not justify handing over control
to the EU."
