REPRESENTING THE NORTH WEST OF ENGLAND

An entirely new system for electing members to the European Parliament was introduced for the European elections held on 10th June 1999.  For the first time in England, a party list system of proportional representation was used to determine who would be elected.

England was divided into eight regions, each returning between four and eleven MEPs, depending on the size of the region’s population.

The North West of England has nine MEPs, four of whom are Conservatives.  There are three Labour members,  one Liberal Democrat and one UKIP.  Each of us represents the whole of the Region rather than one individual part of it.

The North West Region comprises

The Metropolitan counties of Greater Manchester and Merseyside

The Shire counties of Cheshire, Cumbria and Lancashire

The Unitary Authorities of Blackburn with Darwen, Blackpool, Warrington and Halton.
