Biography

INTRODUCING  DAVID SUMBERG - PERSONAL BACKGROUND

I entered national politics in 1983 having previously practised as a solicitor in Manchester specialising in corporate law.

I have served at three levels of government.  I represented Brooklands Ward on Manchester City Council from 1982 to 1984.  From 1983 until 1997, I was a Member of Parliament for Bury South and during my time in the House of Commons, I served as Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Attorney General, was a member of the House of Commons Select Committees on Home Affairs and Foreign Affairs, was a member of the Executive of the British American Parliamentary Group and was a member of the Lord Chancellor’s Advisory Committee on Public Records.

I was elected to the European Parliament in 1999 representing the North West of England.

I have always specialised in foreign affairs, both at national and European levels, and I take a  close interest in relations with the United States of America.

I was born in 1941 in Stoke-on-Trent and am married to Carolyn.  We have two adult children, Jonathan and Katie.

MY WORK IN THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT

Every MEP is a member of two parliamentary committees;  I am a member of the Foreign Affairs, Human Rights, Common Security and Defence Policy Committee of the European Parliament.   I am also a member of the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs.  In addition, I am a member of the European Parliament Delegation for Relations with the United States.

MY WORK IN THE NORTH WEST OF ENGLAND

One of the most important aspects of my work is meeting as many people and organisations throughout the North West of England as possible.  To achieve this, I regularly visit a wide variety of businesses, companies, charities and social groups.  These meetings enable me to gain a full appreciation of the needs and concerns of the people living and working in the region so that European institutions can be made aware of these needs.  At the same time,  I try to promote a greater knowledge of the work of the European Parliament and European institutions and the way in which the North West Region can benefit from them.
