David Sumberg MEP

 BRINGING COMMONSENSE TO BRUSSELS

Date:  22/03/2002

FRENCH BEEF BAN DESERVES ROASTING

North West Euro MP David Sumberg is urging North West farmers to log on to a webchat with French President Lionel Jospin to protest about France’s British beef ban.

Mr Sumberg said the beef ban was reprehensible and broke both EC and European Court rulings.

“This webchat is an ideal opportunity for Northern farmers to tell Mr Jospin, who is on the presidential campaign trail, exactly how disgraceful the ban is and how it is ruining livelihoods.’

Mr Jospin wants people from all over Europe to take part in the webchat, which takes place on Friday  March 22 between 1730-1900 UK time on the website www.lioneljospin.net

‘Britain always complies with EC and European Court rulings why should the French get away this flagrant disregard for law and the British agriculture industry.

‘Apparently translators will be available to help non-French speakers take part in the discussion.  I hope they can cope with some of the more colourful uses of the English language. "
