    BRINGING COMMONSENSE TO BRUSSELS

13th August 2002

Cycling law would drive motorists crazy

North West Euro MP David Sumberg is urging the European Commission to dump proposals to make car drivers responsible for all accidents involving cyclists.

The proposals, which would increase UK car insurance premiums by about 50 pounds, would exonerate cyclists of any responsibility even if they break the law or are in the wrong.

Mr Sumberg said if introduced the new regulation would lead to havoc on the roads.

“This will breed a culture of suspicion and acrimony on the North West’s roads between drivers and cyclists and it leaves me feeling distinctly uncomfortable,’ he said. “Surely the person responsible for the accident should shoulder the blame be they cyclist or motorist. That is fair and balanced.

“This is yet another utterly unnecessary and preposterous example of European interference in UK affairs. Chauffeur driven European commissioners have no justification for imposing a hefty new cost on long suffering British motorists. This is a matter that should be left to British courts and the British parliament to decide – it is time for the war on the motorist to be brought to an end."

NOTE: The proposals have been drawn up by the internal market directorate of the European Commission to harmonise car insurance terms across Europe.
