BRINGING COMMONSENSE TO BRUSSELS

Date:  26/03/2004

BLAIR BETRAYS BRITAIN OVER EU CONSTITUTION

North West Euro MP David Sumberg is responding furiously to Tony Blair's announcement that he wants to move quickly towards an EU Constitution.

EU leaders meeting in Brussels agreed today, March 26, to finalise the EU Constitution at a meeting in June one week after the European Elections. Mr Blair told the media the sooner agreement could be struck between EU members on the detail of the Constitution the better. He stressed this was desirable before the Irish Presidency runs out on June 30.

But Mr Sumberg said Mr Blair is betraying British interests by moving so quickly 'to sign seal and deliver' a Constitution.

"Tony Blair is guilty of appalling misjudgement by encouraging further steps towards agreeing a Constitution,' he said. "He should at the very least be demanding it is renegotiated as the Conservative Leader Michael Howard is. Moreover he should then call a referendum - as is happening in other EU countries to let the people of the North West and Britain decide whether the EU should be given these extra powers and responsibilities over us. We must be clear, the Constitution paves the way for a European Superstate with sweeping powers over our own parliament and justice system. It significantly increases the powers of the central pillars of the EU namely the European Parliament, the European Commission and the European Court. It also creates a full time EU President and whittles down the national veto in 31 policy areas.  But why is Blair not fighting to protect British interests? It is quite staggering that he wants the UK to sign up to a Constitution as soon as possible without so much as a second thought."

Mr Sumberg said adopting the Constitution is not a foregone conclusion and pointed to a growing number of EU countries holding referendums including Denmark, Ireland, Luxembourg, and Portugal and Spain. Italy and France are expected to follow suit.

"The North West public should be allowed to vote on this,' he said. "Our beleaguered Prime Minister must be stopped from selling British powers of self government down the drain without a whimper," he said.
