SUMBERG FURY AT
PLANS TO BAN "MADE IN BRITAIN" LABELS
North West Conservative Euro MP David Sumberg is
slamming European Union proposals to replace "Made in Britain" labels with a
"Made in the EU" label.
The plans currently being
discussed would see the "Made in the EU" label introduced for all products
manufactured in member states.
Mr Sumberg said the idea could only harm business as the many UK products
have built their reputation and identity around being British.
"Products as diverse as food, clothing and machinery made right here in the
North West are recognised across the world for their excellence by the "Made
in Britain" label,' he said. "These new proposals would make it difficult
for firms to promote their products abroad as British. British products
would effectively become anonymous and indistinguishable. I am particularly
concerned that this "Made in the EU" label will only confuse consumers and
buyers in the United States and the Commonwealth, areas where Britain
traditionally conducts a lot of its trade.'
"Moreover, as with so many of
these EU rules and regulations, this ludicrous plan will only lead to yet
more costs and bureaucracy."
